WAKE THE FUCK UP - “Somebody to Love” by Rusko music video
The reappearance of Rusko’s iconic WTFU shirt signals a return to his roots, in more ways than one. He last broke it out in the Hold On video, which feels like a lifetime ago. Now it’s back in Somebody to Love, and I’m pretty sure that’s your grandfather wearing it.
Love, directed by Jason Miller, is essentially a performance video in the same vein as Hold On, also directed by Miller, co-credited with Charles-Ryan. But what he does better here is tell us a story without relying so heavily on a party montage that the visuals lose their character. Indeed, Miller aptly shows us the raucous molly-soaked dubset scene without losing sight of the heart of gold that lies beneath.
Considering the dystopian atmosphere and slow-motion dolly moves that made Everyday (also directed by Miller) something of a working class power anthem, Love reminds us why we got into that mowhawked lunatic in the first place: Rusko’s music is too good not to dance to, unless you live in a crumbling southwestern resort town. Maybe Rusko should’ve played for them instead of sending in his light-up letter-bulbs?
